Teach Your Children To Take Care Of Glasses

Teach your children how to care for glasses

Millions of children around the world need to wear corrective glasses. Either due to myopia, astigmatism, hyperopia or other vision problems. Glasses are necessary so that children who do not see normally can function well and interact appropriately with the environment. But how is the care of the glasses?

Some uses of the glasses:

  • They correct problems that would get worse in the future.
  • They avoid accidents like trips and falls.
  • They allow to identify the objects.
  • They facilitate the learning process in general.
  • They help the development of motor skills.

Convincing the child to wear the glasses

Some children refuse to wear glasses for fear of teasing from friends. Also because they are uncomfortable or because they simply feel that they do not go well with their outfit. Not wearing glasses can aggravate vision problems in early childhood.

Parents are responsible for convincing little ones to wear glasses. And they must conduct that process in the least traumatic way possible. This will also influence the future care of the glasses.

Children understand. It is essential to give the child information that he can process according to his age. As you understand the importance of wearing glasses, it will be easier for them to accept them.

Parents should avoid forcing. It is very easy to assume that the child will not want to use his glasses. When this happens, the parents have a negative attitude towards the child before even trying to convince him. Worse still, they could predispose the child with phrases like “even if you don’t want to, you’re going to use them.”

The choice of glasses and support

Ideally, the child will choose to his liking. It does not matter if the color seems too much or the shape somewhat eccentric, the glasses should be adjusted to the preferences of the child. It is important to give them a choice within the financial possibilities of the parents, in order to avoid frustration.

The specialist must have empathy with the children. A patient ophthalmologist used to dealing with children can facilitate the process.

Play with fantasy. Parents can make comparisons to superheroes from their favorite movies or comics who wear glasses. The child will find them much more attractive.

Family support is essential. If the environment close to the child makes positive comments, it will reinforce a good opinion of the child about the glasses. This directly influences behavior.

Love must prevail. A communication in which the child feels that his fears are heard facilitates the adaptation process. Even if you don’t want to put them on, if you forget them, or have a hard time learning how to care for your glasses, scolding or yelling won’t help. Speaking and listening respectfully to him will improve his attitude. This does not imply giving in and accepting that the child leaves the glasses. This decision can have many more negative and damaging consequences for your health.

The care of glasses is learned at home

Once the parents have worked on the process of adapting the child to use them , it is important to start the training process for the care of the glasses. The child must include certain tips in his daily routine.

How to remove and put the glasses? With both hands. Holding them with one hand and pulling to the side deforms the frame. Even though glasses are made of a flexible material, taking them off and putting them on incorrectly can cause them to break.

Avoid contact of the lenses with any surface. When leaving the glasses on a table or on any other piece of furniture, they must be placed upwards. Doing so in the opposite way can scratch the crystals.

Extreme temperatures damage glasses. Leaving the glasses in the sun for a long time can cause the material from which they are made to lose its original shape.

The time to clean the glasses

Clean with mild soap. Liquid soap is great for cleaning lenses. But some soaps and detergents tend to be abrasive and damage lenses.

Always carry a microfiber cloth. Some fabrics in clothing can scratch lenses. Others will only water the dirt by expanding a veil over the entire lens, so it is best to use microfiber cloths designed to clean glasses.

Rub with the microfiber cloth from top to bottom. Circular motions can scratch the glass. Operating from top to bottom ensures better cleaning.

Take the glasses by the frame. It is the proper way to grip.
